Setup MFA

Understand how to setup MFA for your MX account

Updated over a week ago

Summary steps for MFA setup.

1) MFA is currently optional, but provides an important extra security layer on your MX account.

2) MX works with any authenticator app, but please check if your IT group have a preferred tool.

3) If you already have an authenticator app, please open it.

4) If you do not have an authenticator app, please install one.

5) When you are ready to scan the code, please open your authenticator app; do not scan the code with your camera app.

6) Scan the QR code that you see in MX - an example is shown below, but please do not try to scan this.

7) Enter the 6-digit code in MX to finalise MFA setup.

8) Please record your backup codes - this is very important and ensures you always have access to your account.

Log-in screen

On the log-in screen, check the box 'Setup multi-factor authentication'.

Once enabled, you do not need to re-tick this box on future log-ins.

Click 'Login' and you will see the next screen. Click 'Secure my account' to continue.

You will be presented with some example authenticator apps to read more about. If your IT group have a preferred list of authenticator apps, please use one of those.

If you already have an approved authenticator app installed, please open that on your phone.

If you do not have an app, please install one.

Scan the QR code

After you click 'Setup MX in your app', you will be presented with a QR code to scan with your preferred authenticator app.

Open your authenticator app and choose the 'Add Account' / 'Scan QR code' option and scan the QR image shown. This is especially important for iPhone users, otherwise it will try to open the Apple password tool if you go direct to the camera.

If you are prompted to “overwrite” an existing MFA account, please click cancel as there is an existing account entry conflict. Instead, first rename the existing MFA account that is causing the conflict and then rescan the QR code

If your camera is not working / you are not using a mobile app, please use the 16-digit key instead.

EXAMPLE CODE ONLY - DO NOT TRY TO SCAN THE IMAGE BELOW

Finalise the setup

You will now need to enter a code from your authenticator app, to confirm the connection. The code changes every 30 seconds, so if you see an error, check and enter a new code (hit F5 to clear the screen).

Backup codes

If successful, you will now see Backup Codes, which allow you to access your account even if you do not have access to your authenticator app.

Please record these somewhere safely. Read more at the link above about how to view your codes and regenerate codes.
